The village of San Remo is the entrance to Phillip Island. It is a quiet fishing village most of the year but for one weekend in January or early February every year the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club host a swim and run event known as the Channel Challenge. It is keenly attended by competitors from far and wide.
According to the Woolamai Beach SLSC the San Remo Channel Challenge is “Victoria’s Premier Aquathon event”, which consists of a 550 meter swim across the Narrows (channel) and a 2 kilometre run back over the San Remo bridge to the finish line outside one of the village pubs where the large crowds urge the participants on.
The Channel Challenge is a day-long festival that includes children’s rides, market stands, various food vendors, the notorious “Hole-in-One” golf challenge, a fashion parade, live music and other festivities.
The event is a major fundraiser for Woolamai Beach SLSC, and for our Rotary Club. Our Club coordinates and manages the ‘fair-ground’ and market stalls for this event and receives fees from the festival stalls that helps cover insurances and so forth, with the remainder of fee money going toward our Community projects.
This is a great event on our local summer calendar and is enjoyed by our community and many visitors every year. We are proud to be part of it.
