Rotary Opp Shop 132 Thompson Avenue, Cowes

The Rotary Club of Phillip Island and San Remo is very fortunate to have a community Opp Shop to raise funds for its important charitable projects locally, nationally and internationally. Donations to the Rotary Opp Shop can be made and are welcomed. Monies raised from the sale of goods are put toward Rotary projects and without this valuable asset, we would struggle to deliver the many and significant projects that we do. The Rotary Opp Shop is more than a business; it is a community asset. Over and above the value it adds to our projects it supports members in our community that may find themselves in dire need due to circumstances beyond their control. We work with the emergency services on Phillip Island and provide goods to assist desperate members of the community get back on their feet after a traumatic event such as a fire, flood, or other events beyond their control. We are proud to be able to help our community in many ways and the Opp Shop is one of our great assets to enable this. We are always in need of volunteers to support this important asset so if you would like to make a difference and support the Rotary community please contact us or visit the Opp Shop at 134 Thompson Avenue, Cowes or speak directly. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. The Opp Shop is open Monday – Saturday 10am – 2pm. For enquiries please contact Diane Thomas 0417 577...
School Breakfast Club

School Breakfast Club

Every Tuesday of the school term our Club provides breakfast to the little tackers at Newhaven Primary School. This image is an example of what our weekly task looks like: Snow is the ring-leader often winding the darlings up with bubbles, jokes or the offer of “poison-berry jam” which of course is a favourite (at least with the kids!) Yes, he has been hauled over the coals for misleading advertising but that is another story. Phil is the world champion of ‘paper-scissors-rock’ but is challenged for the title every time he shows his face. There is some serious contenders for the title and we look forward to his next visit to see if he can hold onto the crown for a bit longer. Wendy (on the right) is our “get out of trouble” guardian and reigns in the kiddies once we have wound them up a bit much and they start to get too cheeky for us to handle. Thank goodness for Wendy! Lastly we have Jan – a local that has adopted us and comes to help out every week. Jan keeps count on how many pieces of toast each one has had – ensuring there is enough to go around for all! There is a lot of research that tells us how important breakfast is and it is even more important for children. For this reason we are proud to support Newhaven Primary School in its efforts to ensure at least one day a week all children will have breakfast. Rotary Youth Exchange Program

Rotary Youth Exchange Program

Rotary Youth Exchange Australia provides an opportunity of a lifetime for young Australians aged between 15 & 18 to study abroad for up to one year. Becoming a full-time student of a different country and immersing them self in a new culture they experience first-hand a new way of life and in some instances another language. Our Club supports and facilitates Rotary Exchange Student program every few years. We are a small Club and have many projects and events that we engage in, and therefore we do not always have the capacity to deliver this program. The last student exchange student program that we implemented was in 2014. We will be exploring how and when we can run this again in the 2015-16 Rotary year. This is an amazing program and while it is a great deal of work for students to apply for the Exchange, and there are many hoops to jump through it is well worth it. As a Rotary Exchange Student you will have: An opportunity to develop your personal self confidence and maturity An opportunity to develop a lifetime of international friendships An opportunity to develop a real understanding of many different cultures An opportunity to develop new language skills An opportunity to develop a base for future education and career goals An opportunity to develop in many ways. Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment

RYPEN is an amazing opportunity for young people aged 14 – 17 years to attend a weekend residential camp designed to develop their potential, self-respect, confidence, leadership, and other life skills. Our Club has had students from local Colleges attend a RYPEN workshops. Year ten and eleven students, from schools across District 9820 attend the weekend long camp designed at developing their potential through a mixture of lecture style sessions and adventure-based learning. Its aim is to communicate to young people a series of ideas, problems and social experiences, which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards. A program of thought provoking speakers, social situations and personal challenges is offered. It is an intense learning and social experience. The program is focused on activities that increase participants’ self-esteem and leadership skills as well as allowing opportunities for them to think about understanding themselves and how they relate to others. Parts of the program require the participants to become involved in outdoor sessions that require them to work as a group, as well as being individually challenged. The students attend one of our meetings afterwards and share what they experienced and how it has contributed to their personal development. RYPEN is a great program and we are always happy to support...
ROBART – BBQ Trailer

ROBART – BBQ Trailer

The “Sausage Sizzle” is an Australian culinary institution and generations of Australian children have grown up with a “sausage and bread” morning tea on either a Saturday or Sunday every week. No event is complete without a sausage sizzle and some retail stores are frequented on weekends for their sausage sizzle. In fact there are even apps made public on election day in Australia that tell voters where the sausage sizzles are being held and rating the best one so voters can visit that polling booth to cast there vote! The humble sausage sizzle is such an important part of Australian life that Rotary has embraced the need to ensure our community can access the BEST sausage sizzle on the day. Yes, there is some ‘tongue in cheek’ here, but not much. Our Club is known for turning up at events and providing patrons of that event with ‘a great snag in bread’ for a small donation to Rotary. This is a community service we are proud to offer and we work with many schools, businesses, events and other charities to meet this community need. In 2014 a few of our members got together and designed and built a fantastic asset for our Club; a new BBQ trailer, which has been dubbed ROBART (from the name Rotary BBQ Trailer). The members mainly responsible for the BBQ are Brian Holloway, Gary Simmons, Carron Bourke & John Tennant. The Club was very fortunate to receive donations from Cr Kimberley Brown, The Bendigo Bank, The Paint Place and Rinnae. Many man hours were put in by our volunteers doing the physical work and the result is a wonderful fully equipped BBQ...
